I'm an atheist. That's an atheist with a "little-a", not an Atheist
with a "capital-A". Little-a atheists like me hold our beliefs, but
tend to get embarassed with some capital-A Atheists who use the term
as a cover for angry, antireligious diatribe.
I'm also a member of the Unitarian Universalist religion, whose main
tenet is, broadly stated, that spiritual journey of the individual is
more important than the destination. So we end up with all sorts of
beliefs in our church, including Buddhists, Pagans, highly customized
Christians, and yes even atheists.
One thing this allows us to do is to draw from MANY sacred texts in
order to find guidance. In this, I like to draw from the Bible and
from the Tao Te Ching, the Taoist sacred text.
Now, the Bible says, "the head of the woman is the man" 1 Cor 11:3, so
according to that book the man is the leader of the household.
But the Tao Te Ching says, "Do that which consists of taking no
action, and order will prevail." Book 1, III:10 and "The leader knows
without having to stir, identifies without having to see, and
accomplishes without having to act" Book II, XLVII:107
My conclusion is that it's my job to run the house and that the best
way for me to do so is by doing nothing at all.
My wife disagrees with me. Emphatically.
This is the problem of trying to build our lives around ancient holy
books. At least those not written by our spouses.
